Winning against the odds. How Lance Armstrong redefined cycling

Johan is quite simply a legend in pro cycling. A former cyclist himself with 2 stage wins in the Tour de France, he connected on the roads of Europe with the young Texan named Lance Armstrong and, at the age of 34, became Sports Director for Lance's American team in 1998. In doing so he made Lance something he had never been, a prepared and efficient rider. He convinced him to spend winters training in the Alps and Pyrenees. He altered his pedalling cadence. They went into wind tunnels, seeking better positioning to save fractions of seconds. They experimented with new bike technologies. Together they redefined the approach to cycling. And he stayed with him as he created history with his seven Tour wins. To this day his team is still winning Grand Tours and races around the world and in this unique session Johan will explain his tactical intelligence, gift for preparation and his general approach to talent management, team structure and logistics to ensure the team functions as a high performing unit.

Speaker:

* Johan Bruyneel, Sporting Director, Team Radio Shack & Lance Armstrong's coach

Money ball: How to recruit for success

The revolution that has swept through the academies and changing rooms in the Premier League can be put into 2 words. Arsene Wenger. He has brought a new approach to training, a new way of thinking, and a new style of play to one of the Premier leagues most respected teams. Players are younger, fitter and more tactically aware. Long term success and the pursuit of excellence are the driving forces. And culture is everything to Arsenal. The man at the helm, and one of, if not the, most gifted, articulate and intelligent Managers in the world tells his story and his ambition for the future of football.

Alongside Arsene is a Baseball legend who's approach to player recruitment was famously charted in the best selling book "Moneyball". Billy Beane moulded the Oakland A's into a perennial postseason contender whilst running the club as one of the most cost effective in the MLB. Spending at the wrong time, for the wrong reason on the wrong player is not part of his vocabulary. Thinking, modelling, measurement, benchmarking. Its what Billy does better than anyone in the world and in this session he will outline his strategy for identifying undervalued assets to create and sustain an edge in one of the most competitive sports in the US.

Speaker:

* Arsene Wenger, Manager, Arsenal FC
